Coil Design and Fabrication Expertise

See how a coil is wound ↓

Hyper Tech has experience in coil design and fabrication using:

  • LTS (low-temperature superconductors): NbTi, Nb3Al, Nb3Sn
  • HTS (high-temperature superconductors): BSCCO, YBCO
  • MgB2
  • Non-Superconducting Conductors

Long length multifilamentary wire production has enabled us to design and fabricate both MgB2 and Nb3Sn wound solenoidal and racetrack coils for our customers.

How a coil is made

Winding a superconducting coil

Hyper Tech’s long-length wire lets a coil be wound in one continuous piece. The wire is laid turn by turn and layer by layer onto a former, either round for a solenoid or oval for a racetrack, then finished and tested cold. Here is the sequence, simplified.

Winding, heat treating, impregnating and testing a superconducting coil Wire runs from a supply spool over a guide pulley to a traversing guide that lays it turn by turn onto a rotating former, building up layers. The coil is then heat treated, impregnated with epoxy, cooled and energised, when magnetic field lines appear.
